Dr. Bandyopadhyay was born in Manihara, a village in West Bengal. He lost his father at the age of 13 and supported his familys expenses along with his own education from that age on. He went on to national level leadership positions in academia and banking, and over time has had a significant contribution to banking policy in India. His administrative and academic career spans over six decades, and his life story follows through moments of national importance such as the Indian freedom struggle and the Bengal famine to subsequent decades of nation building and economic development.

He currently continues to research and write on various aspects of sustainable, democratic and inclusive development. He lives along with his family in Pune. This book is the story of his journey, spanning over 90 years across and beyond the country.
